What happened
On 29 December 1994, Turkish Airlines Flight 278 was conducting a scheduled domestic service from Ankara Esenboğa Airport to Van Ferit Melen Airport. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-4Y0 with the registration TC-JES, was performing its final approach to the destination in eastern Turkey when it crashed. At the time of the accident, the area was experiencing heavy snowfall and driving snow conditions.
The impact resulted in a high number of casualties among those on board. Out of the 69 passengers and 7 crew members, there were 57 fatalities. The survivors included 17 passengers and 2 crew members, all of whom sustained serious injuries during the event.
