Engine failure and runway excursion following oil depletion

Casualties unknown • Morehead, KY, US

An aircraft experienced a loss of engine power at cruise altitude due to oil depletion, resulting in an emergency landing and subsequent impact with a mobile home.

What happened

While cruising at 4,500 feet MSL, the pilot observed that the annunciator lights began blinking before becoming solid. At this time, the pilot noted that the oil pressure needle indicated no oil. Following the loss of engine power, the pilot attempted an emergency landing at the nearest airport.

The aircraft touched down halfway down a 2,600-foot runway, which was noted to have high obstructions at the approach end. The pilot was unable to stop the aircraft on the remaining runway surface. The airplane skidded across grass covered in heavy dew and ultimately impacted the back porch of a mobile home. No injuries were reported.

The investigation

An examination of the engine confirmed that it was depleted of oil. A subsequent teardown of the engine revealed several mechanical irregularities: both compression rings on the number two cylinder were fractured into multiple pieces, and all eight rod bolt nuts had been installed upside down. Additionally, investigators found that the camshaft was engraved with the words "NOT A CERTIFIED PART." Engine records indicated that the most recent engine overhaul had occurred on July 5, 1992.

Probable cause

The engine failed due to oil depletion caused by internal mechanical failures, including fractured compression rings and improper installation of rod bolt nuts, as well as the use of a non-certified camshaft.
