What happened

The pilot departed from the aircraft's home base airport with approximately 9 gallons of fuel. After a 45-minute flight to Kent Island, the pilot prepared for the return trip to the home base. At the time of departure from Kent Island, the pilot estimated that the fuel tanks contained about 5 gallons of fuel.

Approximately 40 minutes into the return flight, and roughly 5 miles from the destination airport, the engine lost power. The pilot identified a field for an emergency landing. To avoid obstacles including power lines and livestock, the pilot aimed the aircraft toward a spot just past the middle of the field. During the landing sequence, the right main landing gear struck a small wire fence.

The pilot was not injured during the event.
