What happened

While executing an instrument landing system (ILS) approach to Sonoma County Airport, the unidentified aircraft experienced a loss of engine power. The pilot was forced to perform an emergency landing in a vineyard located approximately 1/2 mile short of runway 32. The impact resulted in substantial damage to the airplane. The investigation

During the investigation, the on-site FAA investigator noted that there was no smell of fuel present upon his arrival at the scene. However, fire department personnel who arrived earlier had reported a smell of fuel. Upon turning the aircraft master switch to the on position, both the left and right fuel gauges indicated zero. Additionally, there was no indication that the propeller was rotating at the time the airplane struck the ground.
