Engine Power Loss During Ferry Flight Results in Forced Landing

Casualties unknown • Galveston, TX, US

A twin-engine aircraft experienced simultaneous power loss in both engines shortly after takeoff, resulting in a forced landing in a field near Galveston, Texas.

What happened

Shortly after takeoff, while at an altitude of approximately 250 to 300 feet AGL, the aircraft's right engine experienced a loss of partial power. This was immediately followed by a loss of power in the left engine.

In response to the dual engine failure, the pilot executed a wide left turn toward a small field. To prepare for the landing, the pilot retracted the landing gear. During the descent, the pilot intentionally struck trees to reduce the aircraft's speed and facilitate passage under overhead power lines. After clearing the wires, the aircraft came to a stop in the field. There were no injuries reported.

The flight was intended to be a ferry mission, transporting the aircraft from Scholes Field Airport in Galveston, TX, to Colorado Springs, CO. The aircraft had been out of service for approximately two years prior to this flight.

Probable cause

The engines suffered power loss due to fuel filters being clogged with debris.
