Loss of directional control during landing on runway 23

Casualties unknown • Myrtle Beach, SC, US

A pilot lost directional control of an aircraft during a familiarization flight following touchdown on runway 23, resulting in the left wing dragging.

What happened

The pilot-in-command was performing a familiarization flight when the aircraft experienced a loss of directional control immediately after touchdown on runway 23. The pilot reported that the aircraft initially veered to the left and subsequently veered to the right. During this maneuver, the pilot attempted to apply the left brake, but the effort was unsuccessful.

As the aircraft continued to veer to the right, it tipped upward, causing the left wing to drag on the ground. Following the excursion, the pilot taxied the aircraft to the ramp to perform an inspection of the airframe.

At the time of the accident, reported winds were from 180 degrees at 8 knots. The pilot noted that the wind conditions were gusty and from the south. An FAA Inspector present at the site confirmed that the loss of control occurred during a crosswind landing on runway 23.

Probable cause

The pilot lost directional control of the aircraft during a crosswind landing.
