Aircraft excursion following bounced landing and wind gust

Casualties unknown • Council, ID, US

An aircraft veered off the runway and struck a dirt embankment after a bounced landing was complicated by a sudden gust of wind.

What happened

The pilot reported that the approach for landing proceeded normally until the moment of touchdown. Upon contact with the runway, the airplane bounced and became airborne once more. Before the second touchdown occurred, a gust of wind struck the aircraft, causing it to weathervane to the right.

As the aircraft made its second touchdown, it continued traveling toward the right side of the runway. In an attempt to regain control, the pilot applied full left braking action. This corrective effort was unsuccessful, and the airplane exited the side of the runway, eventually colliding with a dirt embankment.

At the time of the accident, wind conditions were reported to be varying from calm to gusting with different levels of intensity. The pilot stated that there were no mechanical failures or malfunctions present in the aircraft during the flight.

Probable cause

A wind gust caused the airplane to weathervane to the right following a bounced landing, leading to an excursion off the runway.
