Engine power loss leads to tree collision during takeoff from remote hunting camp

Casualties unknown • Iliamna, AK, US

A commercial pilot experienced engine power loss shortly after takeoff while departing a remote hunting camp, resulting in a nose-over into trees.

What happened

A commercial certificated pilot landed at a remote hunting camp to drop off a passenger. Prior to departure, approximately 12 gallons of fuel were added to the left wing tank. The pilot attempted a downhill takeoff from an area measuring roughly 800 feet in length.

With the fuel selector set to the 'BOTH' position, the aircraft became airborne and reached an altitude of approximately 15 feet. At this height, the engine began to lose power. The pilot switched the fuel selector to the left tank, which caused the engine to regain power; however, the aircraft had already struck trees and nosed over. The accident resulted in no injuries.

Findings

The impact with the trees caused significant damage to the aircraft, specifically affecting the left wing lift strut, the engine mount, the firewall, and both wings.

Probable cause

The engine lost power during the initial climb after takeoff, leading to a collision with trees.
