What happened
The pilot began a cross-country flight under a VFR flight plan, though the aircraft was operating in IMC conditions. Following departure, the pilot obtained an IFR clearance. Approximately 15 minutes into the flight, the right engine lost power. This was subsequently followed by a loss of power to the left engine.
In response to the dual engine failure, the pilot performed an emergency landing with the landing gear retracted. The aircraft came to rest on rough, uneven terrain.
At the time of departure, weather conditions included an overcast ceiling of 200 feet and visibility of 1/2 mile in snow. Winds were reported from 280 degrees at 17 knots, with gusts reaching 23 knots. The altimeter setting was 29.86 Hg, and the temperature and dew point were 25 and 19 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively.
Findings
- The loss of power to the right engine was caused by induction system icing.
- The loss of power to the left engine followed the initial failure.
