Tailwheel aircraft ground loop results in landing gear collapse

Casualties unknown • Fairbanks, AK, US

A private pilot experienced a ground loop during the landing roll of a local flight, resulting in damage to the right wing and landing gear.

What happened

At the conclusion of a local flight, a private certificated pilot was performing a landing toward the north in a tailwheel-equipped airplane. As the aircraft was in its landing roll, it began to veer to the left. In an attempt to maintain directional control, the pilot applied right rudder and right brake; however, the aircraft continued off the left side of the runway and entered a ground loop.

The impact of the ground loop caused the right main landing gear to collapse and resulted in the right wing striking the ground. The aircraft sustained damage to the right wing tip and the right landing gear. The pilot was not injured during the event.

Regarding environmental conditions, the pilot reported wind from the east at approximately three knots. However, a special weather observation recorded at the airport indicated that the wind was calm.

Probable cause

The airplane veered left during the landing roll and entered a ground loop, causing the right main landing gear to collapse and the right wing to strike the ground.
