Landing Gear Collapse During Landing Roll

Casualties unknown • Nondalton, AK, US

A landing gear collapse occurred during the landing roll of a charter flight when the pilot accidentally retracted the gear instead of deploying the flaps.

What happened

An airline transport certificated pilot was positioning an aircraft to begin an on-demand charter flight. During the landing roll at the destination airport, the landing gear collapsed.

According to the director of operations, the pilot intended to raise the flaps but instead inadvertently raised the landing gear handle. Following the collapse, the aircraft sustained damage to the propeller, the landing gear doors, the lower portion of the nose cowling, and the right wingtip. The left and right butt ribs, located inboard and longitudinally along the landing gear wheel wells, were buckled, with the right butt rib sustaining a vertical tear in its metal structure.

Upon inspecting the aircraft after the incident, the director of operations observed that the landing gear handle was in the 'UP' position.

Probable cause

The pilot inadvertently raised the landing gear handle instead of the flaps during the landing roll.
