Helicopter impacts power line during takeoff from trailer

Casualties unknown • Nacogdoches, TX, US

A helicopter struck a power line approximately 30 feet above the ground while lifting off from a trailer, resulting in an uncontrolled descent.

What happened

A helicopter was positioned on a trailer located between two T-hangars, situated directly beneath a power line. During the takeoff sequence, the pilot lifted the aircraft off the trailer and struck the power line at an altitude of approximately 30 feet above the ground.

The pilot reported that while the area surrounding the helicopter had been cleared, the area directly above the aircraft had not been inspected. According to the pilot, the power lines were not marked with red visibility balls. Additionally, the pilot noted that the angle and intensity of the sun at the time of the accident rendered the wires invisible.

Upon impact, the power line became wrapped around the main rotor mast, which caused one of the main rotor blades to partially separate. Following this mechanical failure, the aircraft entered an uncontrolled descent and struck the ground.

Probable cause

The pilot failed to clear the area directly above the helicopter prior to takeoff, and the power lines were not visible due to sun glare and a lack of warning markers.
