What happened
During a dark nighttime operation, the pilot was conducting a final approach to land on runway 09 at an uncontrolled airfield. As the aircraft entered the flare phase for landing, an unobserved deer crossed the active runway directly in front of the approaching airplane. The aircraft's undercarriage struck the animal, resulting in immediate structural failure of the landing gear. Following the impact, the pilot lost control of the airplane. The aircraft veered off the paved surface and came to a stop, oriented 180 degrees opposite to the intended landing direction.
The investigation
Examination of the event revealed that the primary mechanical failure was caused by the external impact with wildlife. The Federal Aviation Administration's Airport/Facility Directory for this specific location contained a published remark advising pilots to "Be alert deer on and in vicinity of arpt...." This warning indicated known hazards in the area, though the animal remained unobserved during the critical phase of flight.
Findings
The sequence of events was initiated by the collision with the deer during the landing flare. The collapse of the landing gear was a direct consequence of this impact. Contributing factors included the dark nighttime conditions which reduced visibility and the failure to observe the animal prior to touchdown. The pilot's inability to maintain directional control after the gear collapse led to the runway excursion.
Safety message
Pilots operating at uncontrolled airports, particularly during low-light conditions, should remain vigilant for wildlife hazards. Published airport remarks regarding animal activity on or near the airfield must be taken seriously as potential flight safety risks.
