An aircraft disappeared from radar and broke apart in mid-air while on final approach to the destination airport.

What happened

While arriving at the destination airport, the pilot was executing an ILS runway 5R approach following radar vectors. During the final approach course, air traffic control issued course correction instructions to the pilot. However, the aircraft exhibited erratic movement that continued until it descended and disappeared from radar coverage. A witness located near the accident site observed the airplane falling from the sky in several pieces.

The investigation

The examination of the accident site revealed that the wreckage was scattered over an area spanning 3/4 mile. A review of the weather conditions at the time of the accident indicated low clouds with a 5500 foot overcast.
