Preflight and Refueling
The pilot reported that the refueling process took an extended period due to a slow fuel transfer rate. He drained 2 to 3 gallons from each fuel tank to inspect for contamination.
Power Loss and Emergency Response
While descending from 1,200 feet to 150 feet above ground level, the pilot looked down at a map on his lap to identify the intended spray field. The engine then began losing power, with torque readings dropping from 80 to 40 pounds. When the pilot attempted to level off, the airplane approached a stall condition. He jettisoned the chemical load and advanced the power lever fully forward, but no increase in power was observed.
Forced Landing and Postaccident Findings
Due to the low altitude, the pilot performed a forced landing straight ahead. The airplane struck a rotating irrigation system in a wheat field, resulting in substantial damage. A postimpact examination revealed water in the engine's fuel filters and the refueling system. Water was also found in the airplane's right fuel tank and the source fuel tank.
