An airplane struck a flock of geese during cruise flight, leading to a forced landing attempt, a go-around, and a subsequent collision with trees, resulting in an inverted resting position.

Incident Overview

During cruise flight at an altitude of 4,500 feet mean sea level, the airplane collided with a flock of geese. The collision caused the aircraft to vibrate violently. In response, the pilot decided to land the airplane and located a field suitable for a landing attempt.

Landing and Go-Around

Upon initial touchdown on the field, the pilot determined that the terrain was marshy and rough. The pilot then attempted a go-around, applying full power. However, the engine produced only 2,200 RPM, compared to the normal 2,500 RPM observed during takeoff. The pilot reported that the airplane struggled to climb.

Maneuver and Tree Strike

During the go-around, the pilot noticed a clearing to the left of the airplane. While turning in that direction, the landing gear and left wing struck trees. The airplane came to rest on the ground approximately 30 feet beyond the trees, inverted.

Post-Accident Actions

The pilot transmitted distress calls over the Columbus Approach frequency and the National Guard frequency. A nearby Air National Guard helicopter was directed to the accident location and subsequently airlifted the pilot to a nearby hospital.

Aircraft Examination

Post-accident examination of the airplane revealed that the right and left wing spars were buckled. No mechanical or flight control malfunctions were reported by the pilot prior to the accident.
