Incident Overview
According to the pilot, while en route to Core Banks Island, the airplane descended to an altitude of 500 feet to survey the site. During the descent, the pilot reduced flaps, applied carburetor heat, and reduced power. The engine then began to run rough. The pilot responded by applying full throttle. The carburetor heat control was turned off, and the engine subsequently quit.
Emergency Landing
During the ensuing emergency landing, the airplane collided with the ground and came to rest inverted.
Post-Accident Examination
Examination of the engine revealed movement of all intake and exhaust valves in all combustion cylinders. No anomalies were noted with the ignition system. The pilot reported no mechanical or flight control anomalies prior to the accident.
Weather Conditions
The Raleigh-Durham International Airport reported a temperature of 75 degrees Fahrenheit with a dew point of 68 degrees Fahrenheit. A review of the icing probability chart indicated conditions were favorable for induction system icing.
