Accident Synopsis
The airplane experienced a loss of engine power during climb after takeoff and subsequently impacted terrain during a forced landing. The power loss occurred as the airplane was climbing through 400 feet above ground level.
Flight and Impact
Following the power loss, the pilot attempted to turn back to the departure airport. During this maneuver, the airplane impacted trees and terrain.
Injuries and Conditions
The pilot received serious injuries, while the passenger sustained minor injuries. The airplane was not equipped with shoulder harnesses. Night visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident.
Postcrash Fire
A postcrash fire consumed the cockpit/cabin area and portions of the inboard wing.
Engine Examination
A disassembly examination of the engine revealed no anomalies that would have precluded operation.
