Aircraft excursion during runway taxi at unspecified airport

Casualties unknown • Ely, NV, US

A commercial pilot experienced a runway excursion while back-taxiing for takeoff due to strong, gusty winds.

What happened

While back-taxiing on Runway 12 in preparation for takeoff, a commercial certificated pilot encountered strong, gusty winds originating from the left rear quarter. During the taxi, a powerful gust lifted the left wing and tail of the aircraft, causing the right wing to strike the runway surface. This impact caused the airplane to pivot to the right and swerve off the right side of the runway.

As the aircraft exited the paved surface, the main wheels entered an area of muddy soil, which resulted in the nose of the airplane pitching down. The pilot was not injured during the event.

The investigation

The aircraft sustained substantial damage to the right wing, the right elevator, and the fuselage. Prior to the accident, the pilot reported that there were no mechanical anomalies associated with the airplane.

Probable cause

A strong gust of wind caused the aircraft to lift its left wing and strike the runway surface, leading to a loss of directional control and subsequent excursion into muddy soil.
