Accident Overview
The Cessna 150D was in cruise flight when the engine began to run rough and then stopped completely, approximately 3.2 hours after takeoff. The pilot executed an emergency landing attempt onto a road. During the landing, the airplane's right wing struck overhead power lines, and the aircraft subsequently impacted the terrain.
Postaccident Examination
Following the accident, FAA inspectors examined the airplane and its engine. The fuel tanks contained roughly 2 ounces of fuel, and the carburetor and gascolator held less than 1 ounce of fuel. When the engine was supplied with 1 pint of fresh fuel for testing, it ran at various power settings for about 5 minutes without any issues.

According to the airplane's Pilot Operating Handbook, the Cessna 150D has an approximate engine operating endurance of 3.9 hours when flying at altitudes between 2,500 and 7,500 feet, with full fuel tanks, a lean mixture setting, and 75% power. The actual fuel load at takeoff could not be determined, as repeated attempts by the Safety Board to contact the pilot were unsuccessful.
