Aircraft overrun at private grass airstrip

Casualties unknown • Crystal Beach, TX, US

A single-engine airplane overran a wet grass runway and struck a parked trailer during landing, resulting in no injuries.

What happened

A private pilot was performing a short field approach to runway 18 at a private grass airstrip. The runway was measured at 2,800 feet in length and 50 feet in width. During the landing roll, the single-engine airplane touched down beyond the normal touchdown point. Upon applying the brakes, the pilot experienced no braking action due to the wet surface of the grass runway. Consequently, the aircraft overran the departure end of the runway and impacted a parked trailer located near the end of the airstrip.

The pilot and one passenger were able to exit the aircraft through the main cabin door. Both individuals were not injured during the accident.

At the time of the event, weather reported at the nearest weather reporting station, situated approximately 15 miles west of the site, indicated clear skies with 10 miles of visibility and winds from the west at 10 knots.

Probable cause

The pilot's failure to maintain control of the aircraft during the landing roll on a wet grass surface led to the runway overrun.
