Cessna A185F nose-over during taxi on frozen lake

Casualties unknown • Ashland, ME, US

A Cessna A185F equipped with skis nosed over onto its right wing while taxiing on a slush-covered frozen lake.

What happened

The pilot successfully landed a Cessna A185F equipped with skis on a frozen, slush-covered lake without incident. During the subsequent taxi, the pilot noted that the aircraft required significant engine power to maintain movement. While performing a left turn, the pilot felt a slight bump and increased engine power to complete the maneuver. This caused the tail of the aircraft to shift rapidly to the right. The pilot attempted to correct the movement by applying right rudder and reducing power; however, the right ski sank into the slush, causing the aircraft to nose over onto its right wing.

The investigation

A mechanical examination of the aircraft was conducted following the accident. The inspection revealed no pre-accident mechanical malfunctions, and the pilot reported no issues with the aircraft's systems prior to the event. There were no injuries reported in connection with this incident.
