Incident Overview
During a training flight, the airplane experienced a loss of engine power shortly after takeoff. The certified flight instructor (CFI) reported that the takeoff was normal and the climb to the practice area had just begun when, at an altitude of about 200 to 300 feet above ground level, the engine began to lose power.
Pilot Actions
The CFI assumed control of the airplane. He applied carburetor heat and pumped the throttle several times, a technique he had used previously to keep an engine running, but the engine did not respond. The airplane was over the end of the runway at that point. Believing they were too low to attempt a turn back, the CFI focused on landing before the clear area ended and a freeway began. He selected a wheat field that he thought would cushion the landing. Approximately 40 seconds elapsed from the loss of power to touchdown.
Landing and Nose Over
The wheat in the field was 4 feet tall and much thicker than the CFI had anticipated. Upon touchdown, the wheat stopped the airplane abruptly, causing it to nose over. The CFI observed fire in the engine compartment. He instructed the student to be careful while unstrapping due to the inverted position but to hurry. Both occupants exited through the right side door and cleared the airplane.
Post-Accident Examination
An FAA coordinator examined the airplane and engine. No abnormalities were found that would preclude normal operation.
Probable Cause
