What happened
The pilot initiated a takeoff using standard techniques, rotating at a speed 10 knots higher than the recommended Pilot Operating Handbook speed. While attempting to maintain ground effect, the aircraft's climb performance began to degrade. To avoid continuing south, the pilot turned to fly parallel to an interstate highway. During this turn, the pilot had to maneuver the aircraft to avoid an overhead sign, a movement that resulted in a loss of airspeed and energy.
To prevent a possible stall, the pilot elected to perform a precautionary landing. The aircraft landed on an embankment adjacent to the E-470 toll road. During the landing roll, the left wing struck a pine tree near the lift strut, which caused damage to the main spar. The pilot was not injured.
The investigation
Documents provided by the pilot indicated that the aircraft was at or near gross weight and within center of gravity limits. Environmental conditions at the time of the event included a density altitude estimated between 8,800 and 9,200 feet MSL. A subsequent examination of the engine revealed that the compression on the number two cylinder was 40/80.
