Aircraft ground loop during landing

Casualties unknown • Port Townsend, WA, US

A pilot experienced a loss of control and subsequent wing strike after touching down on the runway centerline during a landing.

What happened

The pilot performed a normal approach to the destination runway, noting a slight crosswind from the right. The aircraft was configured to compensate for these conditions. Upon touchdown on the runway centerline, the pilot experienced an immediate loss of control.

As the aircraft veered to the right, the pilot attempted to abort the landing by applying full power. While the aircraft momentarily began to depart the runway, it subsequently banked left, resulting in the left wing contacting the ground. The pilot reported that the aircraft encountered a gust of wind following touchdown and noted no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures regarding the engine or airframe.

Findings

  • The pilot was not injured.

Probable cause
