Accident Details
The accident occurred during takeoff from runway 9, a 4,508-foot-long asphalt surface. The takeoff commenced from a taxiway intersection, leaving approximately 4,000 feet of runway available. The dual student pilot was slow in advancing the throttle, which resulted in an additional 200 to 500 feet of runway being used before full throttle was achieved.
Climb Performance
After liftoff, the flight instructor observed that the airplane was not climbing as expected. He then noticed the engine tachometer indicated only 2,000 RPM, rather than the normal 2,500 RPM. At that point, the instructor determined there was insufficient runway remaining to land and elected to continue the flight.
Impact Sequence
The main landing gear subsequently struck power lines located off the departure end of the runway. The airplane then impacted a field on the opposite side of the lines. The nose landing gear collapsed, and the airplane came to rest.
Performance Data
Published performance data for the accident airplane indicated a takeoff ground roll requirement of approximately 850 feet. The distance required to take off and clear a 50-foot obstacle was about 1,585 feet. The distance required to land over a 50-foot obstacle was approximately 1,090 feet.
