Incident Overview
While conducting a go-around from a simulated forced landing, the airplane experienced a total loss of engine power. Due to low altitude, an engine restart was not possible, and the flight instructor elected to perform a forced landing in a nearby corn field. Unable to align with the plowed rows, the instructor landed perpendicular to the rows, causing the aircraft to nose over.
Engine Examination
A subsequent analysis of the engine revealed that the fuel was contaminated with water. The water was found in both the gascolator and the carburetor bowl. Inspecting personnel reported that both components were properly sealed to prevent water intrusion, indicating that the contamination likely occurred prior to entering the sealed components.
Sequence of Events
The incident began when the airplane was executing a simulated forced landing as part of training. Upon initiating the go-around, the engine lost all power. The instructor assessed the situation and opted for a forced landing in a corn field. The landing was made perpendicular to the rows, which prevented the aircraft from tracking along the furrows.
