What happened
On the morning of October 26, 2007, Philippine Airlines Flight 475 attempted to land at Bancasi Airport in Butuan. The Airbus A320-214 aircraft, identified by registration RP-C3224, touched down beyond the designated touchdown zone, leaving insufficient runway distance to decelerate safely. Consequently, the plane overran the paved surface and plowed through a nearby bean field before colliding with several coconut trees.
The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft, which was subsequently written off. Nineteen individuals sustained injuries during the incident, with many wounds occurring during the emergency evacuation process. The pilot and co-pilot reported neck and nose injuries, while other passengers were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Fortunately, there were no fatalities among the crew or passengers.
Investigation
Authorities investigated the circumstances surrounding the overrun. Evidence and witness accounts indicated that the aircraft landed too far down the runway, which was a critical factor in the inability to stop within the available limits. The airport was temporarily closed for at least one day while officials assessed the facility's operational safety and infrastructure integrity.
Findings
The investigation concluded that pilot error was the primary cause of the accident. The decision or execution resulting in the late touchdown left no adequate margin for braking, leading directly to the runway excursion and subsequent collision with terrain features.
