A Robinson R-22 helicopter experienced an uncontrolled yaw and subsequent hard landing on sandy terrain during a hover approach.

What happened

On January 8, 2008, a Robinson R-22, registration N8280J, was performing an approach to a hover approximately 15 feet above ground level. During the maneuver, the pilot applied power to arrest the rate of descent, which caused the helicopter to yaw to the right.

In an attempt to correct the movement, the pilot applied left anti-torque pedal and increased power; however, the right yaw continued, and the aircraft ascended to an altitude between 50 and 75 feet. The pilot then reduced power and lowered the collective, allowing the aircraft to descend to approximately 25 feet above ground level before raising the collective for the final landing. The helicopter subsequently struck sandy terrain on a lakeshore with significant force. There were no injuries resulting from the accident.

The investigation

An examination of the aircraft revealed substantial damage to the firewall and the tail boom. Investigators found no mechanical anomalies during the inspection of the helicopter.

Probable cause

The accident was caused by the pilot's improper use of the collective control and a misjudged landing flare.
