Prelude
The pilot of a Cessna 152 filled the airplane's fuel tanks to capacity before departure. The planned flight duration was approximately 3 hours, and the pilot estimated an endurance of 4 hours based on past experience.
In-Flight Event
After about 2.7 hours of flight, the engine began to run roughly. The pilot altered course toward a nearby airport, but the engine continued to lose power. Recognizing that reaching the airport was not possible, the pilot selected a field for an off-airport landing.
Landing in Field
The pilot executed a landing in the field without further incident. Post-landing inspection revealed that the left fuel tank was empty, while the right tank contained fuel, with its gauge indicating one-quarter full.
Takeoff Attempt and Accident
Deciding to add fuel and depart from the field, the pilot refueled the airplane and commenced a takeoff roll. During the attempted takeoff, the airplane struck a rut in the grass, causing it to nose over. The wings and fuselage sustained substantial damage.
