What happened
On February 24, 2010, a De Havilland DHC-6 300 Twin Otter, registration C-FAKB, was conducting a ferry flight from Calgary, Canada, to the Maldives. During the flight, an electrical fire occurred within the power distribution and generator control box, which is situated in the roof of the passenger cabin.
In response to the fire, the crew isolated the aircraft's electrical systems. The flight was diverted to London Gatwick Airport, where the aircraft landed safely. There were no injuries resulting from the event.
The investigation
The investigation identified the source of the fire as the left generator reverse current relay. Upon inspection, it was determined that this relay featured a different part number than the relays authorized for use on the DHC-6 series aircraft.
