Accident Overview
A student pilot was conducting solo flight operations in a tailwheel-equipped airplane. After completing two successful stop-and-go landings, the student departed for a third solo circuit around the airport traffic pattern.
Final Approach and Go-Around
While on final approach, the student's flight instructor, observing from the ground, noted that the airplane appeared high and slow. The instructor radioed the student to execute a go-around, and the student complied.
Full-Stop Landing Instructions
On the downwind leg, the flight instructor directed the student to perform a full-stop landing. During the landing roll, the student pilot retracted the wing flaps and added engine power, as if initiating a takeoff. The instructor reminded the student that the landing was to be a full-stop. The student then reduced engine power but simultaneously released back pressure on the control stick.
Loss of Control
As the rudder lost effectiveness, the student lost directional control. The airplane departed the side of the runway, struck a ditch, and nosed over. The accident resulted in structural damage to both wings.
Post-Accident Examination
An examination of the airplane following the accident revealed no pre-impact anomalies with the flight control system.
