Accident Overview
A student pilot was conducting a landing on a 3,500-foot-long by 70-foot-wide asphalt runway. Winds were reported as a headwind of 15 knots with gusts to 22 knots.
Approach and Landing
On short final approach, approximately 10 to 12 feet above the runway, the student pilot stated that the airplane "fell out of the sky... and bounced on all three wheels." He then applied full power and initiated a go-around.
Tree Strike and Impact
During the go-around attempt, while still airborne, the right wing struck a tree located approximately 125 feet to the left of the runway centerline. The impact sheared off the outboard three feet of the right wing. Subsequently, the airplane struck level terrain and came to rest upright.
Post-Impact Condition
A fuel spill occurred, but no post-impact fire was noted. The impacts caused substantial damage to both wings, the fuselage, engine mounts, landing gear, and tail surfaces. The student pilot reported no injuries. An examination of the airplane revealed no anomalies.
