A medical transport helicopter returned to its origin in Marion, Virginia, after the pilot experienced chest pains during a positioning flight.

What happened

On August 30, 2010, at approximately 20:20 EDT, a Bell 407 helicopter, registration N516MT, was conducting a 14 CFR Part 91 positioning flight from Smythe County Community Hospital Heliport (VG41) in Marion, Virginia, to Wythe County Community Hospital Heliport (22VA) in Wytheville, Virginia.

Shortly after takeoff, the pilot began experiencing chest pains. After informing the onboard medical crew of the situation, the pilot decided to return to the departure heliport. The aircraft landed uneventfully at VG41. There were no injuries to the pilot, nurse, or paramedic on board. Following the landing, the pilot was airlifted by a company helicopter to a hospital in Tennessee for medical treatment.

At the time of the event, weather conditions were VMC with 10 statute mile visibility, and company flight following was active.
