A pilot experienced a loss of control during final approach while attempting to avoid birds, resulting in a runway excursion.

What happened

On August 21, 2011, a Cessna TU206G, registration N12TL, was on final approach for landing when the pilot observed birds flying low near the intended touchdown point. In an effort to avoid the birds, the pilot maneuvered the aircraft, which caused the plane to touch down shorter than intended. The aircraft subsequently departed the runway, resulting in 1 minor injury and no fatalities. The aircraft sustained substantial damage to its fuselage and wings.

The investigation

The pilot reported that no mechanical failures or malfunctions occurred on the aircraft prior to the accident. Weather conditions at the time were Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC) with a visibility of 10 statute miles and winds from 330 degrees at 6 knots.

Probable cause

The pilot lost control of the aircraft during the final approach phase while performing maneuvers to avoid bird activity.
