Engine failure on TAM Linhas Aéreas Airbus A330 at Paris Charles De Gaulle

No fatalities • Paris, France, France

An Airbus A330 experienced a left engine failure shortly after takeoff from Paris, necessitating an emergency return to the airport.

What happened

On October 11, 2012, a TAM Linhas Aéreas Airbus A330-223, operating flight JJ8055, departed from Charles De Gaulle (CDG) airport in Paris, France. During the initial climb following takeoff, the crew experienced aircraft vibrations and observed an increase in the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) on the No. 2 (left) engine. This was followed by an engine stall involving the Pratt & Whitney PW4168 turbofan.

The flight crew subsequently performed a return to CDG, where the aircraft completed a single-engine landing without incident. There were no injuries resulting from the event.

The investigation

The Brazilian Aeronautical Accident Prevention and Investigation Center (CENIPA) is leading the investigation. Because the engines were manufactured in the United States, the NTSB appointed a U.S. Accredited Representative to assist CENIPA under the provisions of Annex 13 to the Convention on Civil Aviation. The aircraft involved was registered as PT-MVE.
