Boeing 737 diversion to São Luís due to low fuel

No fatalities • Sao Luis, Brazil

A VRG Linhas Aereas Group GOL flight diverted to São Luís, Brazil, after two failed approach attempts at Imperatriz.

What happened

On February 5, 2013, at approximately 0204 UTC, a Boeing 737-73V, registration PR-VBI, was performing an initial approach into Imperatriz-Prefeito Renato Moreira Airport (SBIZ) in Imperatriz, Brazil. The flight crew executed a go-around after determining the approach was unstabilized.

A second approach attempt was subsequently made; however, the crew performed another go-around because fog was obscuring the runway environment. Due to low fuel levels, the crew declared an emergency and diverted the aircraft to Marechal Cunha Machado International Airport (SBSL) in São Luís, Brazil.

The aircraft landed at SBSL at 2340 local time. Following the shutdown of the engines, it was noted that 550 kilograms of fuel remained in the tanks. There were no injuries and no damage to the aircraft.
