Accident Details
On July 2, 2013, at approximately 1530 central daylight time, an Air Tractor AT-402B, registration N2072D, impacted terrain after departing a private airstrip near Ipswich, South Dakota. The aircraft was operated by Tri County Ag Service Inc. under 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 as an aerial application flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed. The local flight was originating at the time of the accident.
Pilot Report
In a telephone interview, the pilot stated that the aircraft was loaded with 380 gallons of applicant and 170 gallons of fuel prior to departure. During takeoff, he rotated the airplane near the end of the runway, and it lifted off. Immediately after, the airplane experienced a twisting or yawing motion followed by a shudder. The left wing then dropped, and the airplane descended. The left wing made contact with the ground, and the airplane slid to a stop.
Damage
Examination of the aircraft revealed substantial damage to the left wing and fuselage. The pilot reported no injuries.
