Accident Sequence
The pilot of an agriculture and pest control category helicopter had been spraying crops for approximately two hours leading up to the accident, covering about 40 acres. The helicopter had been refueled once during that time. During the final pass over a field, the pilot attempted to fly around a power pole but misjudged the clearance. The main rotor blades struck the pole, causing the pilot to immediately perform a forced landing into the field.
Outcome and Damage
During the forced landing, the helicopter rolled over. The accident resulted in substantial damage to the firewall, tailboom, and cabin structure.
Pilot Statement
The pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airframe or engine that would have precluded normal operation. He further stated that the accident could have been avoided if he had flown over the pole rather than attempting to fly around it.
