What happened
On April 19, 2014, a Cessna 170A, registration N9285A, was involved in a landing accident in Huron, South Dakota. During the landing phase, the pilot experienced a hard impact with the ground. This impact caused the right main landing gear to collapse. There were no injuries resulting from the event.
The investigation
An examination of the aircraft revealed substantial deformation of the fuselage located above the landing gear. The pilot reported that there were no mechanical malfunctions involving the aircraft during the flight. Weather conditions at the time were reported as Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC) with a visibility of 10 statute miles and winds from 260 degrees at 7 knots.
