Loss of directional control during landing at EPKW due to brake failure

Casualties unknown • EPKW, PL

A Piper PA-32-300-6 experienced a loss of directional control on the runway after a landing at EPKW due to a malfunctioning right-side brake assembly.

What happened

On July 24, 2015, at approximately 11:30 LMT, a professional pilot was performing a landing on asphalt runway 13 at EPKW. Approximately 250 meters after touchdown, the Piper PA-32-300-6 lost directional control and veered to the left, exiting the paved surface onto a grass strip. After traveling an additional 200 meters and decelerating, the pilot managed to steer the aircraft back onto the asphalt runway. The aircraft then proceeded via taxiway B to the parking area.

The investigation

Following the incident, the pilot conducted a post-flight inspection of the aircraft. During this inspection, it was discovered that the right main landing gear brake assembly was inoperative, resulting in a complete lack of braking capability on that side.

Probable cause

The failure of the right main gear brake assembly prevented the pilot from maintaining effective directional control during the landing rollout.
