During landing on a private airstrip, a piece of concrete chipped off and struck the right brake. The pilot applied brakes, causing a left ground loop. Postaccident inspection revealed a severed hydraulic line on the right main landing gear.

Incident

A tailwheel-equipped airplane sustained substantial damage to its fuselage after a ground loop during the landing roll on a private agricultural airstrip. According to the pilot, a piece of concrete from the runway surface chipped off and struck the right brake during touchdown. The pilot then applied the brakes to stop, which precipitated a ground loop to the left.

Investigation

A postaccident mechanical inspection found that the hydraulic line on the right main landing gear had been severed. This condition would have rendered the right brake inoperable. The pilot reported no preimpact mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airframe or engine that would have precluded normal operation.
