Engine malfunction during flight training near Bydgoszcz

Casualties unknown • Warszawa Babice (EPBC), PL

An instructor and student pilot experienced engine vibrations during training circuits in a Tecnam P2006T, leading to the shutdown of the right engine.

What happened

On December 29, 2016, a Tecnam P2006T operated by Ventum Air sp. z o.o. was conducting flight training circuits for a CPL(A) student near the EPBC aerodrome. During the first circuit, the crew noticed light vibrations coming from the right engine. These vibrations ceased after the pilot engaged the carburetor heat during descent. The crew attributed the issue to high humidity and elected to proceed with the training.

During the second circuit, the uneven engine operation persisted after the aircraft was configured for landing and the carburetor heat was applied. By the third turn, the engine malfunction became severe enough that the instructor took control of the aircraft. Following the fourth turn, the instructor shut down the right engine and feathered the propeller. The aircraft subsequently landed safely without further incident.

The investigation

An investigation was conducted by the aircraft operator. Technical inspections following the event revealed a damaged propeller governor drive gear on the right engine.

Probable cause

The exact cause of the engine malfunction could not be determined, though the intense operational use of the aircraft for flight training was noted as a contributing factor.
