Incident Overview
The pilot reported that during landing, as the tailwheel was settling on the runway, an "apparent change in wind direction" caused the airplane to veer left. The pilot attempted to correct the deviation by applying right rudder and right brake, but the airplane continued off the left side of the runway and experienced a ground loop.
Damage Assessment
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the right wing, the right horizontal stabilizer, and the elevator.
Pilot Statement
The pilot stated that there were no pre-accident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
Weather Conditions
The automated weather observation system at the accident airport, around the time of the event, reported the wind from 300° at 9 knots. The pilot had landed on runway 2L.
