During a three-point landing, an agricultural airplane turned right, exited the runway, and struck a drainage culvert, damaging the left wing. The pilot reported light winds with dust devils and no mechanical issues.

Accident Details

A pilot operating a tailwheel-equipped, restricted category agricultural airplane was landing to take on another load after an agricultural flight. He performed a three-point landing with full flaps and closed the throttle. During the landing roll, the airplane turned violently to the right and became very light on the gear. The nose had turned 45° to the right of the runway centerline. The pilot applied left brake and left rudder, then added power.

Sequence of Events

As power increased, the airplane rolled to the left. The left wing struck the ground, prompting the pilot to pull the throttle to idle and then apply reverse thrust and full brakes. Despite these actions, the airplane exited the runway and collided with a drainage culvert.

Damage

The airplane sustained substantial damage to the left wing spar and aileron.
