Incident Details
During the takeoff roll on a moderately downhill sloped field, the pilot of a tailwheel-equipped airplane perceived a calm wind. However, as the airplane accelerated, the airspeed did not increase as anticipated. The pilot decided to abort the takeoff and reduced engine power while applying full braking.
Pilot Actions
After the airplane slowed considerably, the pilot reported losing elevator authority, causing the tail of the airplane to lift. The pilot was unable to release the brakes in time to prevent the airplane from nosing over. The airplane came to rest inverted. Upon exiting, the pilot noted that the takeoff had been conducted with a tailwind of approximately 10 to 15 knots, with shifting directions.
Damage Assessment
Both wings and the rudder sustained substantial damage as a result of the nose-over.
Mechanical Condition
The pilot stated that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane or engine that would have precluded normal operation.
