What happened
On August 14, 2021, a training jump session was being conducted at Gliwice Airport (EPGL) involving a student parachutist. The student was performing jumps according to the SL-1 training program, which involves a deployment using a deployment bag/line system. During the second jump of the session, the student successfully exited the aircraft and experienced a proper canopy opening. The student initially glided toward the designated landing area; however, at a low altitude, the student failed to maintain the intended flight path. The parachute began to veer to the right, leading to a landing while in a turn. This lateral movement caused uneven loading on the student's legs upon impact, resulting in a broken right leg. Emergency medical services arrived at the scene to provide first aid before transporting the student to a hospital.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the sequence of the landing and the control of the parachute during the final phase of the descent. The investigation established that meteorological conditions at the time of the incident did not contribute to the event.
