What happened
On May 1, 2025, at approximately 10:30 mountain standard time, an experimental amateur-built Rutan Long-Eze, registration N433EZ, was involved in an accident near Tucson, Arizona. The flight was operated under 14 CFR Part 91 as a personal flight.
The flight began at Ryan Field Airport (RYN) in Tucson. After departing, the pilot flew to Marana Regional Airport (AVSK) to perform a low approach to the runway. The pilot then returned to RYN, where the aircraft performed a full-stop landing on runway 6R.
During the landing roll, the pilot reported that the left brake failed. This failure caused the aircraft to veer to the right and exit the runway. During the excursion, the aircraft's left canard struck a runway sign, causing substantial damage to the component. The aircraft came to a stop approximately 20 feet off the right side of the runway. The pilot was not injured.
