What happened
On 26 April 2022, at approximately 19:08 local time, a Ryanair Boeing 737-800, registration EI-ENK, was parked at stand 23 of Almería Airport following a flight from Manchester. During the disembarkation process, a passenger descending the aircraft's integrated forward airstairs fell from the final steps onto the apron. The fall resulted in serious injuries to the passenger, who required emergency medical transport to a local hospital.
Immediately following the incident, the senior flight attendant provided first aid. The investigation noted that the crew's efforts to assist the passenger were briefly hindered by another passenger attempting to film the event. The captain alerted Air Traffic Control, which subsequently coordinated the arrival of emergency medical services.
The investigation
The CIAIAC examined the circumstances surrounding the fall, including the aircraft's equipment and the operator's procedures. The investigation reviewed the technical specifications of the Boeing 737-800's retractable stairs, noting they feature narrower steps and lighter handrails compared to standard external airport stairs. The aircraft was equipped with non-slip material on the treads and warning signs advising passengers to use the handrails.
Investigators also reviewed Ryanair's disembarkation protocols. The airline's procedures include a passenger announcement in English instructing travelers to use the handrails and to hold the hands of children. The investigation confirmed that the crew acted in accordance with established safety procedures and that the operator met all regulatory requirements.
Findings
- The passenger fell from the last few steps of the forward airstairs during disembarkation.
- The aircraft was operating in compliance with all safety and maintenance regulations.
- The medical response from local services was within expected parameters.
- The investigation determined that the fall occurred by chance.
