What happened
On March 8, 2022, at approximately 13:15 CST, a wheel-equipped Cessna C208 operated by Bamaji Air Inc. was performing a visual flight rules (VFR) flight in Ontario. The aircraft was traveling from Sioux Lookout (CYXL) toward an ice strip located at Springpole Lake. While approximately 17 NM north-northwest of Sioux Lookout, the aircraft struck the frozen surface of Lac Seul.
Following the impact, the aircraft's emergency locator transmitter (ELT) activated, allowing the signal to be detected by the Search and Rescue Satellite-Aided Tracking (SARSAT) system. A Department of National Defense aircraft, which was performing training maneuvers in the vicinity, responded to the alert. Search and rescue technicians subsequently parachuted to the crash site.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the circumstances leading to the terrain impact. The aircraft was carrying one pilot and one passenger at the time of the accident. Upon arrival at the scene, it was determined that the aircraft sustained substantial damage, though no fire occurred during the event. The occupants of the aircraft survived the crash with minor injuries.
